My niece having a baby prompted me to start to produce baby boots.
Felt is made by laying out about 4 layers of wool fibres that are encouraged, through various techniques involving heat and friction, to join together and then shrink by about 1/3. So, very small, delicate objects, such as baby boots, are very fiddly and time-consuming, and I would probably have given up had they not been for a new member of my family! Now I’m really pleased that I persevered, and enjoy making them. They are sold with a small calico bag that is reminiscent of a child’s school pump bag.
The sizes are from new-born to approximately 1 year (not all babies have the same size feet of course!). I have chosen not to make boots and slippers for toddlers and upwards, since they would require a non-slip sole and would be subjected to much more wear and tear.
‘Sprite’, or baby hoodie, has been introduced to compliment the baby boots, with sizes available to commission from 0 – adult.
In the pipeline: baby wraparounds, miniature versions of my adult wraparound – will swaddle babies as well as being used as pram or cot blankets. They will also make an ideal new baby present!
